Young learner training

Part-time, 4 hours per week, 32 hours.This is a very practical course that mainly covers the age groups 8-10 and 11-13, although 5-8 and 13-16 are taken into consideration. The course covers the following areas:

The Young Learner: differences and similarities at different age groups, learner attitudes to learning English, the Spanish and English school systems, ways of developing autonomy.

Classroom Management: managing the group and the individual, organising the room and the space, managing time, problems and options.

Skills Development: the four major skills and ways of working with these, teacher talk and storytelling.

Planning: course design and timetabling, lesson planning.
a task based approach, project work.

The Teacher: exploring teacher attitudes to the younger learner of English, roles and responsibilities

Materials and Aids: an evaluation of suitable course books and supplementary materials, using and creating audiovisual aids.

Evaluation: day to day evaluation and feedback, progress tests; design and feedback.

Language Development: fun ways of dealing with vocabulary, structures and functions.

Warmers and Coolers: a host of short games.

At regular intervals during the course the course participants are involved in a mini-project to design a topic/activity based syllabus.
